Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor (DSCC) Sayeed Khokon has said law should be strictly implemented to prevent road accidents.
“Recently, road accidents have increased at an alarming rate. Reckless drivers and carelessness of the people are the main reasons behind these accidents,” he said while inaugurating a campaign titled “Traffic Management and Encouraging Citizens to Prevent Road Accidents” in Shahbagh, Dhaka on Saturday.
“We want strict implementation of laws to prevent road accidents. The city corporation also conducts mobile court drives every now and then in this regard,” he said.
He referred to two recent accidents in the city - a college student who died while undergoing treatment after losing his hand due to the collision of two buses and a young woman who lost a leg after being hit by a bus. “It is a matter of grave concern,” he said.
Khokon blamed reckless driving for the accidents. “Most drivers in Dhaka are aged between 12 and 14. Many have no driving licences. These young people are very reckless.”
He also mentioned carelessness on the pedestrians’ part. “We often see people crossing the roads while talking on mobile phones.” The mayor called on people to use zebra crossings and follow traffic signals while crossing the road.
DSCC CEO Khan Md Bilal, Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Ferdous Khan and local councillor MA Hamid Khan were present at the workshop, among others.
