DMP chief promises action against police for assaulting journalists
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Tuesday that action will be taken against those involved in assaulting two journalists while they were covering a political event in the city's Naya Paltan area on Monday. The DMP boss came up with the assurance talking to reporters who went to DMP headquarters to submit a memorandum protesting the incident. On Monday, Arman Kaisar, a reporter, and camera person Manik of 'Bangla TV,' went to cover a report of a protest programme organized by the Dhaka South unit of BNP in front of their party headquarters. At one stage, Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain of Motijheel Division physically assaulted the two journalists. Terming the incident as undesirable, Asaduzzaman said: "After investigation, action will be taken against those involved in the assault." Earlier in the day, a number of journalists formed a human chain in front of the DMP Commissioner's office and later submitted a memorandum to the DMP commissioner, protesting the attack on the two journalists. Kamruzzaman Khan, former general secretary of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), Morsalin Nomani, former general secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), its former president, Abu Darda Zubair, and executive member of Dhaka Union of Journalists, Golam Mostafa, among others, took part in the human chain.
