Five people have sustained severe burns in an explosion that took place while they were conducting maintenance at the reserve water tank of a building in the Muslimbagh area of Pallabi, Dhaka.
The victims of the explosion have been identified as former AGB employee and owner of the six-storey building Yakub Ali, 70, his wife Hasina Ara Khanam, 60, tenant Yasmin, 27, her three year old daughter Ruhi, and tank cleaner Hasan, 32, confirmed DMCH police outpost Sub-inspector Bachchu Mia
All of the injured have been admitted to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). They were first taken to a local hospital before being transferred to DMCH.
According to Yakub's brother-in-law Md Maruf, the explosion occurred at around 11:30am on Tuesday, when Hasan was brought in inspect and clean the reserve water tank as it was not operating properly.
“Hasan tried to shine a flashlight into the tank to check the water level. As he could still not see properly, a candle was brought to provide more light. When they tried to light the candle, there was an explosion,” he added.
DMCH burn unit Resident Dr Partha Shankar Pal said all of the injured were in critical condition, having suffered severe burns in their nasal passages.
“Yakub is suffereing from 25% burns, Hasina 95%, Yasmin 41%, Ruhu 90% and Hasan 85%,” he added.
