Rajuk starts demolishing Ha-Meem Group MD’s home

Update : 20 Mar 2018, 11:23 PM
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) began demolishing the Dhaka home of the chairman and managing director (MD) of Ha-Meem Group on Tuesday, despite his claims to have provided legal documents approving the design and confirming his ownership. AK Azad is a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and is also the owner of two media outlets in Bangladesh: Dainik Samakal and the Channel 24 television station. He issued a press statement Tuesday evening saying Rajuk started demolishing his house in Road 86, Gulshan, even after they were shown legal documents of his ownership. “A team from Rajuk came to my house at around 10am and started demolishing it with a bulldozer,” the statement read. “We showed them all the legal proof of our ownership, but they still did not stop. By 1pm, one side of the building had been razed to the ground. “Later, I showed the approved design of the house and all other relevant documents to Rajuk chairman. Only then, they stopped.” The demolition of the building, located in Road 86 of Gulshan 2, in progress on March 20, 2018 Dhaka TribuneRajuk Executive Magistrate Waliur Rahman said the building’s design was not approved by Rajuk. Another Rajuk official, who preferred not to be named, said the building was constructed in 1964 on 0.80 acres of land. “AK Azad bought the home ten to twelve years ago but he is yet to transfer ownership of the property to his name,” the official said. “We have sent multiple notices to the homeowner before starting to demolish the building, but he did not care to respond.” The official could not confirm if the notices were sent directly to AK Azad. Rajuk brought in heavy machinery for the demolition, which began with the main entrance. Although all utility connections, including electricity and gas, were disconnected beforehand, the building still contained furniture and other valuables. “We were supposed to demolish the building next Sunday [March 25], but we had to do it today for strategic reasons,” Waliur Rahman said. Although the Dhaka Tribune could not reach AK Azad directly for comments despite repeated attempts, his bodyguard, Mohammad Sumon, said Rajuk did not provide any notice to the property owners regarding their decision. “As far I know, there was no problem with legal documents of the house,” Sumon said. “Azad’s family members wanted time to shift their furniture and other goods but they offered only 30 minutes. Later, the family members left the house.”Sections of this article were first published on banglatribune.com
