Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is opening a new emergency department in the first week of March, confirmed by university Proctor Dr Habibur Rahman Dulal.
Sources said that BSMMU decided to open an emergency department about a year ago. Initiatives were undertaken to materialize the plans. The administrative work proceeded accordingly.
Dr Habibur said: “We are nearly done. The necessary equipment is taking some time to purchase.
“If contractors can deliver the equipment this month, then we can open up the department in the first week of March. The emergency department will be located under the cabin block,” he said.
He also said it will be a general emergency department which will be handling preliminary cases and may not be able to handle casualty emergencies like road accidents. He mentioned a Korea-funded 1000-bed hospital under construction which will have 200 beds for casualty emergency.
The proctor also said they will not be hiring new staff for the department. It will run with the current staff.
BSMMU Neurosurgery Department Chairman and project coordinator Prof Dr Kanak Kanti Barua said: “The exact date for the opening is yet to be set. But we will try to start services as soon as possible.”
He added they will be expanding the emergency departments to include the orthopaedic, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, and gynaecology departments.
“Currently we have 25 beds in neurosurgery and 15 beds in orthopaedics. After opening the emergency department, we will be adding 60 more beds”, he further said.
Health Rights Movement National Committee President Prof Dr Rashid-E- Mahbub said: “Specialists from different fields work at the university. We will have to see how much time they can dedicate for the emergency department.”
