BNP stages demo protesting Khaleda’s conviction, 3 detained in Dhaka

Police have detained at least three BNP activists on Friday, during a rally brought out in Dhaka to protest against party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Identities of the detainees could not be ascertained yet. Around 1:55pm, hundreds of BNP leaders and activists organized a procession from Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Dhaka. Large number of law enforcers, including police and Rapid Action Battalion, were seen following the BNP procession. BNP had announced the protest programme on Thursday, shortly after Khaleda and five others, including her son Tarique Rahman, were jailed by a court for embezzling Tk2.1 crore that came as donation for the orphans. Shibli Noman, the additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Zone, said: "BNP activists brought out a peaceful rally, so the police did not obstruct them.” "But law enforcers are prepared for taking action if agitators create any untoward situation," he said. He said police had detained three persons from the area after the procession, adding: "We will investigate whether they were trying to create unrest." However, when the demonstrators reached at Nightingale intersection near BNP's Naya Paltan central office around 2:20 pm police dispersed them. Amid heightening tensions and various speculations, a special court here on Thursday convicted former prime minister Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the much-talked-about Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
