DU officials beat up Ittefaq Journo

Update : 18 Dec 2017, 03:01 AM
A journalist was harassed and assaulted allegedly by some staff of Dhaka University on Sunday while the former was investigating for an article on alleged anomalies and indiscipline among the employees of the institution. Kabirul Islam Kanon, the assaulted journalist, is a DU correspondent of the Daily Ittefaq. Kanon said: “Following a complaint, I went to the administrative building to collect some information for a report on the late arrival of the university’s staff at work. The employees are supposed to attend work at 9am. I reached the building at 9:30am and found none in room No 206. Later, I visited another room that was, too, empty.” The journalist alleged that on his way back, section officers Nizam Uddin, Md Ahsanul Kabir and Sheikh Md Giyas Uddin intercepted the journalist and beat him up, which caused severe injuries in the chest. Introducing himself as a former Chhatra League leader, Giyas Uddin, who maintains close ties with DU Registrar MD Enamuzzaman, also threatened the journalist with dire consequences if he filed any report in this connection, Kanon alleged. “The trio also took away my mobile phone.” The journalist filed a complaint with the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, who assured Kanon that he would take actions against them if found guilty. Meanwhile, describing the incident as unacceptable, Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja) condemned the attack and threatened to go on a tough movement if the attackers are not brought to book, according to Duja press release.
