Tahsan Ahmed Rasel, president of the Bangladesh Chhatra League Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall unit at Dhaka University (DU), has been accused of attempting to extort money from the director of a new television drama who was shooting some scenes on the campus.
Monjurul Alam, director of the drama titled “Bhalobasar Shimante,” on Thursday alleged that Tahsan had threatened him and demanded Tk20,000 for shooting on campus even though he had taken the necessary permission from the authorities concerned.
Alam told reporters: “I took permission from Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall’s provost for shooting in and around its premises. That hall is adjacent to SM Hall. While shooting several scenes outside Zahurul Haq Hall, we had moved in front of SM Hall and set up our equipment.
“That’s when Tahsan approached us with a group of students and demanded Tk20,000 in exchange of allowing us to shoot,” he added.
“Tahsan had threatened to break our camera and equipment if I didn’t give him the money and forced me to go with them inside SM Hall’s guest room. They, however, left and I was released when journalists started to come after hearing about the situation.”
Alam claimed that the two hour delay caused by the incident had cost his production a logistical loss of Tk1 lakh.
The Dhaka Tribune could not reach Tahsan for comment despite repeated attempts to contact him by phone.
Meanwhile, Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Sohag brushed off the allegations against Tahsan.
“Tahsan had only asked the director whether he took the required permission for shooting on campus. He didn’t demand any money from him.”
Actor Shajal Noor and actress Ashna Habib Bhabna are starring in the drama Monjurul Alam is directing.
