The life and contributions of Abul Mansur Ahmad

A discussion on the life and works of journalist, lawyer, politician and a litterateur Abul Mansur Ahmed was held in the capital on Friday. Abul Mansur Ahmad Smriti Parishad organised the event titled "Language Movement and Thoughts of Abul Mansur Ahmad" at Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy. The discussion was chaired by Professor Emeritus Rafiqul Islam. Dhaka University Professor Habib Ar Rahman presented an article at the event, discussing Abul Mansur Ahmad’s various contributions to the Bengali language movement and to Bengali literature. Speakers present at the event praised Abul Mansur Ahmad’s role in supporting the Bengali language in 1943, which eventually helped fuel the Language Movement in 1952. Speaking at the discussion, Professor Emeritus Rafiqul Islam said although Abul Mansur had retired from political life, he kept writing about the political issues of the then East Bengal and practical ways to resolve them. He further added that Abul Mansur had a specific thought about Bengali as the state language, and his real success was to spread his thought throughout the then East Bengal. Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman said: “Abul Mansur raised the demand of Bengali language in 1943, and has enriched the language through his literary works.” Prof Mansur Musa, Dr Ahmed Mawla and Dr. Mohammad Azam were among the guests that attended the event.
