At least 13 students of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been injured in a clash between two factions of the ruling party’s student wing at Dhaka University’s Sir AF Rahman Hall over a canteen seat.
The clash took place around 8:30pm Sunday between the followers of Sir AF Rahman Hall unit Chhatra League President Hafizur Rahman and Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Tusher.
According to the hall students, Mahmudul’s follower Nahid was having dinner at the canteen when Hafizur’s follower Faruk asked him to empty the seat. At this Nahid got angered and locked in scuffle with Faruk at one stage of altercation.
Hearing the matter, the followers of both the factions came to the canteen with sticks and iron rods and started beating each other that left 13 injured.
The raging Chhatra League activists also vandalised the hall canteen by breaking a number of plates and glasses during the half-an-hour long skirmish.
Later, the university teachers rushed to the scene and calmed the situation.
The injured were admitted to the university medical centre, Dhaka University acting proctor Amzad Ali told the Dhaka Tribune.
“After the investigation, stern action would be taken against the individuals who are responsible for the incident,” Amzad said.
Mahmudul accused Hafizur’s followers to be responsible for the clash.
However, Hafizur said: “It was a pre-planned attack by Mahmudul and his fellows to aggravate the situation.”
Dhaka University unit Chhatra League Secretary Motahar Hasan Prince said: “We will take steps against the activists who were involved in the incident.”
Few weeks back, the same factions locked in a clash over watching a match at the hall’s television room, leaving six injured.
