DNCC clears Gulshan roads and walkways occupied by Russian Embassy

Update : 20 Apr 2017, 08:37 PM
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Thursday cleared roads 79 and 83 and their adjoining footpaths in the Gulshan 2 diplomatic zone, as they were occupied by the Russian Embassy. A DNCC cleaning team led by Mayor Annisul Huq bulldozed 180 three-foot-high heavy planters as well as metal fences in what is one of the most secure areas in the capital. On Tuesday, the authorities of the American Club, also known as the American Recreation Centre, similarly cleared out Road 70 in Gulshan 2 of the city after it was requested by the DNCC. With the latest clear out near the Russian Embassy, all concrete blocks on the roads in the diplomatic zone have been removed. The large blocks were used for beautification as well as to serve as a security measure, but they also obstructed the movement of pedestrians, a press release said. On March 4, the Embassy of the United States of America and the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka also cleared out the footpaths adjacent to them after a city corporation request. The DNCC further cleared the roads and footpaths occupied by several embassies in the Gulshan 2 diplomatic zone on April 11. On February 28, DNCC had asked eight foreign missions to remove obstructions they had placed on footpaths next to their missions.
