The 73rd birth anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the veteran freedom fighter, former president of Dhaka City Awami League and first elected mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation, was observed through various programmes on Saturday.
On this day in 1944, Mohammad Hanif was born in a prominent Muslim family of Dhaka. He was a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and played an active role in all democratic movements, including the Mass Upsurge of 1969 and the 1971 Liberation War.
Hanif’s only son, Sayeed Khokon, marked the day with a group of street children and family members, including his wife Farhana Sayeed, mother Fatema Hanif, sisters Sahana Hanif and Rehana Hanif, cutting a cake around 12pm, a press release said.
Sayeed later handed out food to the children, the press release added.
To mark the occasion, the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, Mayor Hanif Smriti Sangsad and different social and cultural organisations arranged a doa and milad mahfil and offered prayers at Hanif’s grave.
The former mayor, who suffered critical splinter injuries in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack, died on November 28, 2006 at the age of 62.
