Dhaka-Ctg 4-lane highway to open July 2
The much-awaited Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane highway is going to be opened for public use before Eid-ul-Fitr. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to formally inaugurate the four-lane highway on July 2, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday during a visit to the project at Bhatiary in Chittagong. “The Dhaka-Chittagong highway is going to be inaugurated on July 2. This is an Eid gift from the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the people of the country,” the minister told reporters. “All the work, including the construction of 23 bridges, 243 culverts and 14 by-passes on the 192-kilometre road from Daudkandi to Chittagong has already been completed,” he added. He said he was hopeful that travellers now would be able to travel from Dhaka to Chittagong in four and half hours, and vice versa. “Apart from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, the Mymensingh-Joydebpur four-lane highway will also be inaugurated on the same day. Construction of the Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway will also start at the end of this year,” Obaidul said. The Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane highway project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council on December 26, 2005. The project was supposed to be finished by June 2012, but the deadline was reset to December 2016 following three extensions.
