Lack of internet awareness among children makes them easy targets of cyberbullying

Parents need to change themselves first to keep children safe online, according to experts.

If parents are made aware of the controlled usage of the internet and technology, it will help to ensure safe use of the internet by their child. Otherwise, the child may be harmed psychologically or physically due to the negative effects of internet use, speakers told a webinar on Saturday.

The webinar, titled "Safe Internet for Children," was organized by the National Committee on Cyber Security Awareness Month (CAM) -2021 in partnership with Dhaka Tribune.

A month-long awareness program was being conducted through mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited and technology service provider Cyber Paradise.

Mental health expert Dr Mehtab Gazi Rahman told the webinar that excessive internet dependence has a massive impact on a child's mental health. The time that children used to spend going outdoors for sports or talking to friends is now being spent on social media.

He advised parents to control their child's internet use and ensure the child is sleeping well, as well as monitor changes in eating habits and social behavior.

In order to maintain these, parents need to be aware and spend time with the child, he added.

Cyber Security expert Mushfiqur Rahman said: “Children are not fully aware of internet usage, so they are easily victims of various cybercrimes including cyber bullying.

“To keep children safe in the internet world, they need to be taught the intricacies of protecting personal information. Such as passwords, location, home address, phone number - these cannot be shared in any way.”

He also advised parents to exercise parental control over their children's use of the internet. Parental control facilities are now easily available on various devices.

Deputy Controller of Cyber Crime and Security, Information and Communication Technology Department Hasina Begum said there is no alternative to awareness to ensure a safe internet.

She added: “We have already involved 82,750 students and their parents in awareness training. But at the beginning of the pandemic situation the program was closed for a few days.

“With the increase in internet use at this time, many young women were also harassed. Then we organized a webinar and started the program again.”

She called upon all to take part in this awareness work collectively.

Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, convener of CAM National Committee and president of ISACA Dhaka Chapter, said that in order to make the cyber world safe for children, parents must first be aware. Must use controlled technology.

“Only then can we build a healthy cyberculture in the country,” he added.

The moderator of the webinar was Kazi Mustafiz, a member of the CAM National Committee.
