DMT found for the first time in Bangladesh

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday arrested four people in Dhaka for possession of illegal hallucinogenic drugs lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

This is the first time that the DMT has been seized in Bangladesh.

The suspects were identified as Syed Moin Uddin Ahmed alias Shadab, 29, Abraham Zunayed Taher, 25, Swapnil Hossain, 22, and Simiyon Khandaker, 23.

During a press briefing at the RAB media centre on Sunday, RAB 2 Commanding Officer (CO) Khandaker Saiful Alam said the four were detained from near Love Road in the Tejgaon Industrial Area of the capital.

“Upon receiving a tip-off, members of the RAB Headquarters Intelligence and RAB 2 conducted a joint drive in the area to capture the suspects, and they recovered 40 pieces of LSD blotting paper, 600mg of DMT, and 62g of cannabis,” he said.

They also seized equipment for taking the drugs, a mobile phone, money, and a digital scale.

Shadab and Taher had studied abroad, while the two others are studying at local private universities, the RAB CO added.

“Law enforcers have no previous record of seizing DMT in Bangladesh. It is a hallucinogenic drug like LSD and can be inhaled as smoke or can be injected. It can be produced in chemical labs,” he further said.

After completing his O-levels at an English medium school in Uttara, Shadab went to Darjeeling in India to complete his A-levels. In 2015, he went to Thailand to pursue a BBA degree.

On the other hand, Taher went to Malaysia after completing O-levels and stayed there till 2016. Later, he went to the UK.

Both of them became addicted to LSD and DMT while studying in Thailand and the UK, respectively, according to the RAB official.

After returning to Bangladesh, Shadab and Taher began smuggling drugs into the country through the postal service. They have admitted to both using and selling the drugs.

During preliminary interrogation, the detainees said they purchased 600mg of DMT for around Tk20,000, the RAB CO told the briefing.

He said: “Several groups are involved with the trading of these drugs. We will continue our operations as necessary to save the young generation.”

A day earlier, police for the first time seized eskuf, a cough syrup that contains the same addictive chemical as phensedyl. A total 184 bottles of the cough syrup were recovered.

In late May, police first learnt about the trading of LSD in Bangladesh following the death of a Dhaka University student, Hafizur Rahman, who slit his own throat with a cleaver near the Central Shaheed Minar.
