They thought she was with her in-laws in Chandpur

The family of the young woman who was trafficked to India and tortured in a video that went viral on social media have said they were unaware that she had been taken out of the country.

Her father told the media he had thought his daughter was at her in-laws’ home in Chandpur.

“Bring back my daughter right away. I can’t imagine her being so far away, in another country,” he said, still horrified by the video.

The woman, who had studied up to grade three, married a man from Chandpur seven years ago. The couple, who have a three-year-old daughter,  used to live in Moghbazar.

The husband is a migrant worker who went to Kuwait three years ago, and the woman used to regularly visit her parents, who also live in Dhaka, after he left to work in the Middle Eastern country.

“A little over a year ago, she met a friend of her husband named Hridoy in Moghbazar and told me he would help her find work abroad with her husband. I tried to stop her, but she went anyway,” the woman’s father said.

He told the media his daughter did not willingly go to India and must have been coerced into going there. He could not keep in touch with her as he fell ill following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He pleaded for the authorities to bring back his daughter as soon as possible.

The woman’s father filed a case with Hatirjheel police station over the rape and torture of the woman by other Bangladeshis in India. A total of five people are accused in the case, including Rifadul Islam alias TikTok Hridoy, DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (media) Iftekhaiul Islam told Dhaka Tribune

Hridoy has already been arrested in India.

“We are investigating the case. Action will be taken as per investigation,” he said.

All five Bangladeshis arrested in connection with the incident in India went there illegally, and none of them had passports or visas. They used to traffic school and college girls by conning them with TikTok related promises, Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Shahidullah said at a press conference at his office in Shyamoli yesterday.

“India will investigate the case in its way and we will investigate it our way. However, since the perpetrators are Bangladeshis, efforts are being made to bring them back to the country through coordination between the two countries. Efforts to bring the survivor back are also being made,” he said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman was trafficked to India after being promised that she would be sent to Dubai.

Earlier, police in India’s Bengaluru arrested five Bangladeshis — four men and a woman — for allegedly raping and torturing a woman believed to be from Bangladesh.

“According to information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and believed to be from Bangladesh,” Bengaluru police Commissioner Kamal Pant told the Hindustan Times.

“The tortured woman was brought to India for trafficking. She is now in another state. A team of police has gone to take her to Bangalore. After taking her to Bangalore, her statement will be taken in the presence of the magistrate,” Pant tweeted.

The culprits brutalized the victim due to financial disputes and had brought her to India for human trafficking, he said.

According to media reports, Hridoy’s parents claimed they have had no contact with their son in four months.
