Bangladesh receives around 40 million minutes of incoming calls from abroad every day on an average through legal channels
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three people along with illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment, worth Tk 5 crore, from the New Market, Turag and Shah Ali areas of Dhaka city.
The elite force will unveil the detail of the recovery in a press briefing at its media centre in Karwan Bazar at 3:30pm on Thursday.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) incurs huge revenue losses due to illegal international calls made from all over the country, using the unauthorized VoIP equipment.
According to a former acting chairman of the BRTC, the country registers a revenue loss amounting to nearly Tk106.98 crore in just one hour when such illegal calls are made.
“The other approximately 25 million minutes of incoming calls come through illegal channels, causing revenue loss worth around a few millions in taka,” he told the journalists at a press briefing in 2018.
