The accused, a rickshaw puller, was caught red-handed by locals
Police have arrested a rickshaw puller for murdering his ex-wife and her sister at a rented room in Dhaka’s East Nakhalpara.
The deceased are Yasmin Akhter, 28, and Shimu, 17. Yasmin was a garment worker, while Shimu was a salesperson at a private company.
Police arrested Yasmin’s ex-husband Rony Mia after he was caught red-handed by locals around 2pm, said Tejgaon Industrial Area police station Officer-in-Charge Biplab Kishore Shil.
Rony has confessed to the murders in initial questioning, but the motive will be revealed after the full interrogation. He stabbed Yasmin to death and strangled Shimu, the OC added.
Locals said they saw Rony stab Yasmin through the window of the rented room around 1pm and captured him before he could flee. They handed him over to police when law enforcement officials arrived after being informed about the incident.
According to police sources, Rony and Yasmin divorced four months ago, and she moved to the Nakhalpara area. He tracked her down with the intention of killing her due to a previous dispute.
Shimu was alone at the room when he arrived, and he strangled her to death after an argument. When Yasmin returned for lunch, he stabbed her in the head and body.
Yasmin and Ronny have two daughters, aged 12 and 4. One of them lives at a relative’s house and the younger daughter lives with her grandmother in Narsingdi.
Yasmin's elder sister has filed a case with the Tejgaon police station over the incident. The bodies have been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
