Mirpur police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostazirur Rahman confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
The ruling party Awami League’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, recently came under fire after six activists reportedly confined and raped a woman in Sylhet’s MC College hostel.
A young woman filed a case against Chhatra League’s Dhaka City North unit VP Sabuj alleging rape on Wednesday night. During the eary hours, police raided several places in the capital and arrested Sabuj and Fatima, who aided and abetted in the rape, the Mirpur OC said.
However, the OC did not agree to give information regarding where arrest took place.
Mirpur police Sub-Inspector (SI) Roksana Akhter Runa said that the victim was a house help of Fatema. Speaking of medical treatment, Fatema brought the rape survivor to Sabuj's rented house in West Manipur on the night of September 27.
Then Sabuj raped the young woman after threatening her. Later, the survivor filed a case against them, she added.
The survivor has been sent for medical examination, she further added.
When produced before a court, Sabuj was remanded for five days and Fatema for three days, respectively.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mandal passed the order after a hearing on Thursday. The accused’s lawyer petitioned for bail, seeking cancellation of remand.
General Record Officer of the court, SI Abdul Wadud (Women and Children), confirmed the matter.
He said that the investigating officer of the case produced each of the accused in court seeking a seven-day remand on Thursday afternoon.
When contacted, Chhatra League Dhaka City North unit President Ibrahim Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that he knows about the matter. “There is no place for such accused in the Chhatra League. We expelled him.”
