Gangchil Bahini emerged around 2000 and began conducting terrorist and criminal activities near Amin Bazar
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested MP Salauddin, suspected leader of a criminal syndicate called Gangchil Bahini, and two of his associates who were in possession of arms and drugs.
The three were detained from Savar’s Amin Bazar area on early Friday. A foreign pistol, magazine, two rounds of ammunition, 190g of heroin, 500 pieces of yaba, and other homemade weapons were recovered from their possession, according to a RAB 4 press release.
RAB said Gangchil Bahini emerged around 2000 and began conducting terrorist and criminal activities near Amin Bazar. The original leader of the gang was Anwar Hossain.
The gang was called Gangchil Bahini because they conducted their activities in waterlogged areas most of the time. After Anwar’s death in 2017, Salauddin took over as leader, the press release added.
The syndicate was mainly involved in extortion, drug trafficking, robbery, murder, and other criminal activities in Amin Bazar, Gabtoli, Bhakurta, Kaundia, Beribadh, Keraniganj, and Mohammadpur.
RAB also said that Gangchil Bahini were involved in the killing of an SI of Savar police station in 2002, the killing of two members of RAB in 2007, as well as looting arms from Diabari police outpost and the Naval patrol team in the Amin Bazar area.
Furthermore, the gang would rob sand from trawlers on the Turag and Buriganga rivers, steal shipments of bricks and extort from brick kiln and trawler owners.
The members of Gangchil Bahini also targeted influential people of the area for kidnapping and ransom.
During the preliminary interrogation, the accused said they always conducted their activities in and around the rivers most of the time as they travelled by river. Their mode of transport was a double engine trawler.
Several cases for charges such as murder, arms, robbery, extortion, and violent crimes against each member of the syndicate are pending with Savar Model police station.
