DB: Shahed and Sabrina were in contact with each other

Police to investigate whether they were co-conspirators or not

Update : 20 Jul 2020, 09:36 PM

Both Regent Hospital boss Md Shahed, and JKG Health Care Chairman Dr Sabrina Arif Chowdhury, recently became the focus of public attention when their alleged Covid-19 test scams were exposed.

Latest developments show that they were in contact with each other and met several times as well.

Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

“However, we are yet to find any connection between the two scams. They were apparently running their fraudulent operations independently,” Mahbub said.

Police will investigate whether they were co-conspirators or not, the police official added.

A Dhaka court has sent JKG Health Care Chairman Dr Sabrina to jail after rejecting her bail petition in a case filed concerning the fake Covid-19 test scam.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqul Islam gave the order on Monday after Inspector Md Liakat Ali produced Sabrina in court following a two-day remand. Liakat is the investigation officer in the case.

DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub said all those accused in the JKG scam case are now in jail.

Meanwhile, Shahed of Regent Hospital is now in DB’s hands on remand for questioning.

Sabrina, her husband Arif, and their associate, have confessed to the scam, and the authorities have found irrefutable evidence to prove the crimes, Mahbub added.

Police and authorities concerned say neither the Health Ministry nor the health department can shift blame as it is their duty to vet an organization before signing any project with them. The incidents occurred due to the administration’s inefficiency and lack of foresight, they said.
