Police arrest suspects in three other districts over as many incidents of rape

A six-year-old girl has been raped and strangled to death by her neighbour in Parkhrishnapur village of Damurhudaupazila in Chuadanga.

Police recovered the first grader’s body from a vegetable field around 11pm on Saturday.

“Around 9am on Sunday, police detained the accused, Mominul Islam, 20, over the brutal murder after the girl’s family filed a complaint,” said Damurhuda model police OC Sukumar Biswas, reports our correspondent Mehedi Hasan.

The girl’s father also filed a case against Mominul later in the afternoon.

Quoting her family, police said the girl had left the family home looking for her mother on Saturday afternoon and went missing. Her family members later found her dead body.

“Our preliminary findings suggested that the child was raped before she was murdered,” the OC said.

“Mominul also confessed to committing the crime during questioning following his detention.”

3 more held over rapes

Meanwhile, three men were held in different districts over the rapes of three minors in as many districts over the past week.

In Chittagong, police arrested a three-wheeler driver Saturday night from Hathazariupazila’s Gumanmardan area for reportedly abducting and raping an SSC examinee eight days ago.

The accused, Md Saddam, 28, abducted the girl when she was returning home from school on January 25 and raped her. He then left the unconscious girl in front of her house, police said, reports our Staff Reporter Anwar Hussain.

Hathazari police OC Md Masud Alam said Saddam confessed to his crimes during preliminary questioning. He was produced before a court and sent to jail on Sunday.

In Moulvibazar, police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly raping a 12-year-old minor after abducting her from Shamshernagar Tea Garden in Kamalganj upazila.

The accused, a tea worker, reportedly grabbed the child at an adjacent tea plantation and raped her on Friday evening, said Shamshernagar police outpost Inspector Arup Kumar Chowdhury, quoting the girl’s mother’s complaint, reports our correspondent Saiful Islam.

Inspector Arup added that the suspect was sent to jail by a local court on Sunday.

In Tangail, another man, who was arrested Saturday, confessed before a court on Sunday to his involvement in the rapes of three schoolgirls on January 26 at Ghatail.

The accused, Jahidul Islam, 20, is the fourth man to confess to their involvement in the rapes, said court police’s Inspector Tanvir Ahamed, reports our correspondent Abdullah Al Numan.

Tanvir said the court sent Jahidul to jail after recording his statement.

Madrasa teacher held over rape attempt

In Benapole, police on Thursday arrested a local madrasa teacher for reportedly attempting to rape a third grader in Sharshaupazila.

The girl’s mother had filed a case with Sharsha police earlier that day, alleging that teacher Liaqat Ali tried to rape her daughter in an empty classroom of the madrasa on Wednesday afternoon, reports our correspondent Selim Reza.

Sharsha police OC Ataur Rahman confirmed Liaqat’s arrest, and added that the man was produced before a local court and sent to jail on Friday afternoon.

Jubo League leader booked for attempted rape

In Savar, Ashulia police detained Dhamsona union Jubo League General Secretary Sanowar Hossain on Saturday, over a written complaint made by a woman for attempted rape.

On January 29, Sanowar, a family friend of the woman’s husband, tried to rape her at her house.

Ashulia police station Sub-Inspector Fazar Ali confirmed the matter on Sunday.

“A case is in process to be filed against the accused and the detainee (Sanowar) will be sent to court tomorrow (Monday).
