On July 23, 1989, Sagira Morsheda, 34, was shot dead by a hired assailant in Dhaka’s Siddheswari area when she was returning home with her daughter from school.
The arrestees are – Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury, his wife Sayedatul Mahmuda alias Shahin, Anas Mahmud alias Rejwan and Maruf Reza.
Police arrested Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury and his wife from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on November 12, Anas Mahmud from Rampura area on November 10 and Maruf Reza from Baily road on November 13.
Confirming the matter, PBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Banaj Kumar Majumder at a press briefing at his office on Thursday evening said: “All the accused confessed their crime before the court.”
“Sagira’s husband Abdus Salam Chowdhury filed a case with Ramna police station over the murder,” DIG Banaj said.
On September 1990, the Detective Branch (DB) of police submitted a charge sheet accusing Mintu alias Montu in connection with the murder.
“The court granted the prayer of the assistant public prosecutor (APP) for further investigation in the case when the name of Maruf Raza, a suspect in the case surfaced,” said the DIG.
Maruf Reza filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the court order. A total of 26 police officers investigated the case from 1990 to 2019, Banaj added.
On July 11 this year, the High Court dismissed the writ and directed PBI to submit a report after a thorough investigation.
PBI arrested the four and produced them before the court where all confessed to their crime. The court asked the PBI to submit charge sheet within two months, he further said.

Shahin planned to kill Morsheda and disclosed her decision to her husband Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury. They both agreed and according to the plan they hired Maruf Reza, a patient of Dr Hasan for Tk25,000 and told Anas Mahmood Rezwan to perform the job together, he added.
According to the plan, Maruf and Rezwan barricaded Morsheda’s rickshaw in Siddheswari area when she was returning home with her daughter on July 25, 1989. Maruf tried to snatch Morsheda’s bag and ornaments while Rez shot her in her hand and chest and fled the scene leaving her dead.
