Members of Department of Narcotics Control's (DNC) Dhaka metro unit have arrested a couple with Tk14 lakh over their suspected involvement in yaba and drug dealings in the capital.
They were arrested from the Haji Chinu Miah Road in Tikkapara area of Mohammadpur around 12pm on Wednesday, police said.
The arrestees were identified as Jahirul Islam, 33, and his wife Ripa Akhter, 22.
Acting on a tip-off, the DNC team conducted a raid and made the arrests, the department’s Assistant Director Md Khorshid Alam told Dhaka Tribune.
He said they also seized 350 yaba pills, 20 mobile phones and Tk14,00,510 cash from the couple’s possession.
Khorshid said Jahirul had been a drug addict for six years and dealing drugs for five years. “This couple is very clever and they have been working behind the curtain for a long time. This is the first time DNC has arrested Jahirul.”
He added that they were questioning the couple and taking legal steps against them.
