5 Ansar-al-Islam members held in Dhaka

The arrestees had gathered in Jatrabari with the intention of creating violence

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has arrested five members of the banned militant outfit Ansar-al-Islam—also known as the Ansarullah Bangla Team—from the Jatrabari area of Dhaka.

The arrestees are: Md Saifulullah, 26; Md Abdul Alim, 22; Md Faizullah, 18; Md Zahirul Islam, 19; and Md Mainuddin alias Sajib, 19.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Masudur Rahman said they had conducted the raid based on a tip-off at Chontech area in Jatrabari on Tuesday at around 7:30pm.

Rahman said police seized 20 detonators and two machetes during the raid.

"During primary interrogation, the arrestees informed us that they had gathered in Jatrabari with the intention of creating violence," the deputy commissioner informed.

He said they were investigating for further information about other members of the group. 

A case has been filed in this connection with the Jatrabari Police Station.
