Locals take swift action against 55-year-old man, accused of the attempted rape
Police have held a suspect for allegedly attempting to rape a six-year-old child in Rangamati.
Kawkhali police station detained Gopal Krishna Dash, 55, around 11:30pm on Sunday.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, the district's Additional Superintendent of Police Md Sufi Ullah said: "When everyone was busy with their prayers on the night of Shab-e-Barat, Gopal used this opportunity to commit this heinous crime."
According to the locals, proprietor of Usha Art in Kawkhali area, Gopal, lured the six-year-old child by offering her chocolate and took her to the ground floor of Powa Para Yasmin Market where he attempted to rape the child.
The whole incident was recorded on the market's CCTV cameras.
Later, locals came to know about the incident through the CCTV footage, following which, the victim's father—along with the agitated locals—filed a complaint with Kawkhali police.
Meanwhile, when news of the attempted rape spread in the area, the locals surrounded Gopal's house till the members of the Kawkhali police station arrived and arrested him.
Sufi further said: "We have taken this issue very seriously.
"We are preparing to file a case against the accused.
