Minor girl pregnant after rape in Kushtia, mother speechless

The third-grader admitted that her 55-year-old neighbour had raped her six months ago

A mother had taken her 12-year-old daughter to the doctor, fearing that she was suffering from an inflated belly caused by kidney complications. 

But after the prescribed ultrasonography test, the doctor told the mother that her minor daughter was 25 weeks pregnant, leaving the woman speechless. After some questioning, the minor girl admitted that a much older neighbouring man named Osman alias Hama, 55, had raped her. 

The incident took place in Mirpur area in Kushtia around six months ago, but  only recently came to light. The victim’s mother promptly filed a case with the Mirpur police station against Osman on Monday, accusing him of raping her daughter.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Mirpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam said: “This is a sad incident indeed. The accused, Hama, is currently on the run from the law and we have launched a drive to detain him.”

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, the victim’s mother, said: “My daughter’s belly was becoming inflated. Suspecting kidney complications, I took her to a doctor. But after tests, I learned that she is pregnant.” 

“After questioning, she told me that she was raped. I lead an impoverished life, and I do not know what to do. I want punishment for the man who raped my daughter,” she said. 

Sonologist at a local diagnostic centre Mujibur Rahman confirmed that a minor girl who is six months pregnant came in for a test with her mother.

Local police, quoting the victim’s family members, said the victim is a third-grader at a local primary school and lives in the Khandakbaria area. The accused, Hama, had raped the girl around six months ago, after learning she was home alone.

Hama also reportedly made death threats to the girl, preventing her from telling anyone about her ordeal. 

The Dhaka Tribune tried to reach the accused man, Osman for his comments on the matter. However, locals confirmed that he went on the run from the law as soon as this incident became public knowledge.

A father of two children and hailing from Naogaon, Hama made his living as a fish trader. The police have launched a drive to detain him.
