A study on women assaulted in Rajshahi district over the past 14 months has identified at least 177 incidents.
The study was revealed by an NGO called Association for Community Development (ACD) on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
According to the study, between January 1, 2018, and February 28, 2019, the district of Rajshahi alone has seen 12 murders of women, 26 attempted murders, five unnatural deaths, 13 rapes, four attempted rapes, 28 counts of suicide, eight attempted suicides, five kidnappings, eight incidents of sexual harassment, two disappearances, and 66 acts of violence against women.
The study has highlighted several incidents. In one, a senior police officer was said to have tortured his wife and her family over Tk5 lakh in dowry. In another, a university professor abandoned his wife and children over a Tk50 lakh dowry.
An officer at the office of the United Nations Human Rights Council also harassed his wife for dowry.
A number of murders were directly tied to dowry. In many cases, the husband was joined by his family in physically assaulting the wife.
Human rights activist Ehsanul Imon said a large number of women suffering violence in the present day are victims of people they know.
He said people need to be made aware of what is right and wrong, and enshrine values and virtues to avoid such things from happening in the future.
