The incident took place in Bagerhat early Monday

A suspected forest robber has been killed in a so-called “gunfight” between members of the coast guard and the Asabur robber gang in the Sundarbans of Bagerhat.

The incident took place in the Sonaimukhi Khal area early Monday.

The deceased robber could not yet be identified.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Coast Guard (west zone) Operation Official Lt Abdullah Al Mahmud said: “Acting on tip-off about a possible robbery, a team of ours conducted a drive in the area.”

“When coast guard members reached Sonaimukhi Canal, forest robbers, hiding in position, opened fire on them. The coast guard returned fire in self-defence, triggering a shootout that left one forest robber dead on the spot and the rest fleeing deeper inside the Sundarbans,” he said.

Coast guard members recovered the body, along with four firearms and one round of bullets, the official added.
