The journalist was physically assaulted in front of Barguna police station OC, OC (investigation)
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Detective Branch (DB) police has been closed for physically assaulting a journalist when he went to cover the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations in Barguna.
Barguna acting Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Tofayel Ahmed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.
The victim, Malek Mithu, is the Barguna correspondent for DBC News channel and the Daily Observer newspaper.
Condemning the incident, the Barguna District Television Journalist Forum held a meeting at the Barguna Press Club.
The Forum’s General Secretary, Abu Zafor Md Saleh, submitted a written complaint against the ASI to the SP. The DB ASI, Md Ripon Miah, was instantly closed to the police lines after the complaint was received.
Malek said: “I went to the Barguna District School exam centre to cover the SSC exam news on Saturday morning. At the time a police personnel was letting me inside the school premises but all of a sudden DB ASI Ripon stopped me from entering.
“When I asked him the reason for stopping me, in front of other people present there, he physically assaulted me.”
“I later called the Barguna Sadar police station and my fellow journalist colleagues and told them what happened,” Malek said.
Malek further added: “The Barguna police station OC, Abir Md Hossain, and OC (investigation) Md Rafikul Islam, came to the scene after they received my call. At the time I was once again assaulted in front of them.”
Commenting on the matter, SP Tofayel said: “A three member committee has been formed to probe the matter. If found guilty in the investigation, we will take further action against the accused.”
The SP also condemned the attack on Malek.
