A case has been filed against Tanzila Haque Chowdhury Mitu and five others for instigating the suicide of her husband Dr Mustafa Murshed Akash.

The deceased's mother Jobeda Khanam filed the case with Chandgaon police station in Chittagong on Friday.

The others accused are Mitu's father Anisul haque Chowdhury and mother Shamim Shelly, sister Sanzila Haque Chowdhury, her alleged boyfriends Mahbubul Haque and an Indian citizen referred only as Patel.

Inspector Jobair Syed said the deceased doctor's mother filed a case against the six persons named and three to four others unnamed.

He said: "Mitu will be produced before the court. Police will ask to take her into remand to interrogate her."

Earlier on Thursday night, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) detained Mitu at her cousin’s house in the Nandankanon area under Kotwali police station. Her husband had allegedly taken his life on Thursday morning citing her extramarital affairs.

In a press briefing at Dampara Police Line on Friday morning, CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) Mizanur Rahman said Mitu had confessed to a number of issues during primary interrogation, and sidestepped others.

However, the police official declined to disclose details about what was revealed during interrogation, as the incident is still being investigated.

“The couple was married in 2016. It was an unhappy marriage, plagued by conjugal disputes between the two over extramarital affairs. At one point, Mitu went to the US and returned to Bangladesh on January 13,” ADC Mizanur Rahman said.

“A few hours before Akash’s death, the couple had a heated argument, and Akash’s mother asked Mitu’s father to take her daughter-in-law away around 4am. After Mitu left her in-laws house, Akash posted a status on Facebook detailing Mitu’s extramarital affairs. After some time, he injected himself with insulin, which may have led to his death,” he added.

The police have already seized the couple’s mobile phones to investigate the matter.

In a Facebook post detailing the relationship between him and his wife, Akash claimed Mitu cheated on him repeatedly, but refused to divorce him when he asked her if she wanted to be with someone else.

Akash accused his wife of instigating him and causing him undue grief and distress.

After the post, he changed his profile picture to a photo with his wife, captioned: “Keep well my beloved, with your lovers."

Several hours after his death, the Facebook post was removed.

Akash was a student of Chittagong Medical College's 47th batch and completed MBBS in 2010. He was also pursuing post-graduate training while working at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
