A former Chattra League leader and two others have been detained from Dhaka University (DU), due to allegations that they are involved in the yaba trade.

The three were arrested from DU’s Jagannath Hall on Wednesday.

The detained Bidhan Chandra Roy is a former Health Affairs secretary of the hall unit Chhatra League, as well as a former student of the philosophy department of the university.

A case was filed against Bidhan in 2015, after he was accused of stealing money from a boy and threatening to rape his female friend.

The two other detainees were identified as Subarno Baidya, from Gopalganj, and Imran Ahmed Shuvo, a staff member of a private television channel.

“They were caught red handed in room 19 of Jagannath Hall's North Building, with some yaba, a yaba production machine, and gadgets for inhaling yaba and marijuana as well,” said DU Assistant Proctor Dr Litan Kumar Saha.

The three were handed over to Shahbagh police station by the university authorities.

Hall sources said Assistant Proctors Dr Litan Kumar Saha and Dr M Maksudur Rahman launched a raid at the room after receiving a tip-off, with the help of plain-clothes police.

At least 50gm of marijuana and some yaba tablets along with the accessories were recovered from the room around 2.30am on Wednesday.

Bidhan and Imran were detained from the room immediately. Subarno took shelter at the nearby room 20/1, from where he was also detained later.

Assistant Proctor Litan said: “On the basis of a tip-off, we conducted a raid at the room. The accused were handed over to the police and the room has been sealed.”

“Bidhan’s ID card was expired, but he claimed to be a student of the university to gain entry.”

Provost of Jagannath Hall Prof Dr Asim Sarker said: "We will take further action after talking to the residential teachers of the hall.”

University Proctor Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani said: “Police are looking into matter of how they got in to the university premises, as none of them are students of the university.”

Shahbagh police station OC Abul Hassan said: “The university authorities handed them [the detainees] over to us. As per the instructions of the university authorities, we will take legal action against them.”
