Three people have been arrested for allegedly throwing locally made explosives on an Awami League (AL) procession in Mirpur on Monday.

Police say all three men – Moazzem Hossain, Shafiqul Islam and Iqbal Hossain are active BNP members.

Darussalam Police’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Enamul Haque confirmed their arrest saying: “We have asked to take them into remand for seven days from a Dhaka court but was only granted one day for each.”

The SI said they threw the locally made explosives when two campaigning groups from AL and BNP were distributing leaflets on Sunday in the same area.

When the two processions came close, two locally made explosives were thrown at the AL procession injuring the AL activists.

After the incident, Nahid Sarker, former vice-president of Dhaka City's North BCL, filed a case accusing 132 people, he added.

SI Enamul said: “We conducted a raid after the case was file and arrested Moazzem, Shafiqul and Iqbal – who have been accused in the case,” adding that they are also trying to arrest the others.
