The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested eight members of a biker gang from Dhaka’s Rampura area Saturday night for being involved in a robbery.
The arrestees have been identified as Md Mehedi Hasan, 22, Md Shahariar, 22, Kazi Yusuf Bin Shawkat alias Anik, 19, Aminul Islam alias Amin, 20, Mohammad Abu Huraira Abid, 18, Md Sabbir Hossain, 18, Shishir Ahmed alias Sajal, 22 and Mazharul Islam alias Anik Islam, 21.
At the time of arrest, RAB recovered two firearms and five motorcycles from their possession.
Confirming the matter, RAB 3 Operation Officer Assistant Superintendent ASM Shakhawat Hossain said a biker gang of around 20-25 people demanded Tk50,000 from a bKash agent in Khilgaon’s Taltola area on Saturday evening. The agent, Monir Hossain, did not agree to pay the money.
At one point, the leaders of the gang, Rabby alias Patha Rabby and Adittya, attempted to shoot at the bKash agent, who ducked in time and survived the attack.
A RAB-3 patrol team were able to arrest five members from Rampura with the help of the businessman.
Later, another three were also arrested from the same area based on the information provided by the five arrestees, he added.
“During primary interrogation, the accused confessed to the charges of robbery and extortion,” the RAB official said.
He further said the accused robbers also confessed that they had been in contact with Khan Rasel group of Old Dhaka, Emon group of Shahjahanpur, Mujibur Rahman Rana group of Hawai lane of Goran and Mehdi group of Goran Jilapar area.
All members of the group are between 17 and 24 years of age.
“We will take legal action against them. Operations are being conducted at various places in Dhaka to arrest other members of their group,” Shakhawat Hossain said.
RAB said the biker gang, named “Road Rides” and “Cross BD” and led by Rabbi and Adittya, had been terrorizing the area for almost a year.
“They ride motorcycles recklessly and stalk girls on the streets. They are also involved in various criminal activities including hijacking, drug trade, drug trafficking, and extortion in the city,” a RAB source said.
