A case will be filed in Maheshpur police station against the criminal

Police have detained one Tariqul Islam, 35, with $22,000 recovered from inside his sandals from the border area of Sojia Bazar in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district.

He was detained on Sunday morning. The detainee, Tariqul Islam, is the son of Mashiyar Rahman, local resident of Bhairaba village in Jhenaidah.

Maheshpur police station OC Rashedul Alam said: “We learned from a tip-off that a group had illegally smuggled US Dollars into Bangladesh from India. Based on this information we conducted a drive in Sojia Bazar and detained the suspect. Later we recovered $22,000 from his sandal hidden in an unprecedented way.”

He also said: “A case will be filed in Maheshpur police station against him.”

Upon a primary investigation, Tariqul confessed he was supposed to smuggle the dollars from the town of Ramnagar in India into Maheshpur, and also that he had smuggled in dollars like this before.
