A girl has been gang-raped on a moving bus on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Highway on early Friday.
The incident took place on the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Tangail, at around 12:30am.
The police have arrested the driver's assistant Nazmul, 22, over the incident.
Bangabandhu Bridge East police station Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain said the bus was leaving Tangail for the Bangabandhu Bridge East bus stand at 12:30am on Friday. As it was night, there were no passengers on board except the victim. Taking advantage of the situation, the driver, supervisor and helper raped her.
After hearing the screams of the victim, police patrolling the highway followed the bus to Bangabandhu Bridge and captured the helper. However, the driver and supervisor managed to flee the scene.
Nazmul made a confessional statement to a Tangail court on Friday afternoon. Bus driver Alam and supervisor Bishu are still absconding.
The OC added that they suspect the woman may be mentally disabled, as she could not provide her name or address when asked. She was later sent to Tangail General Hospital.
A case has been filed against the bus driver, helper and supervisor over the incident.
On August 25 last year, transport workers raped and murdered Jakia Sultana Rupa, a law student and employee of a multinational company, on a moving bus of Chhoa Paribahan when travelling to Mymensingh from Bogra. Her body was dumped in Modhupur Upazila of Tangail.
A Tangail court sentenced four people to death and another to seven years imprisonment in the case filed over the incident.
