She was arrested on Thursday night in a case filed under the ICT Act
Restaurateur Faria Mahjabin, who was arrested last week, tried to create disorder by spreading rumours on social media during the recent student movement over safer roads, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) chief says.
RAB arrested the Nerdy Bean Coffee House owner on the basis of the authentic information… she tried to create disorder by spreading rumours on social media, Director General (DG) Benazir Ahmed said during a press briefing at the elite force’s media centre in Karwan Bazar on Saturday.
The RAB DG said not only those who spread rumours’ but also those who were behind inciting violence from the back will be brought to justice.
RAB arrested Faria Mahjabin, 28, was arrested at her home on Haji Afsar Uddin Road in west Dhanmondi on Thursday night. Later, a Dhaka court granted police a three-day remand to interrogate in a case under ICT Act filed with the Hajaribagh police station.
RAB DG Benazir presented a phone call record of Faria before the media. In the record, Faria was telling someone that her staff told her not to come as an attack occurred on the opposite side of the restaurant.
Faria said the staff found three bodies outside. After a while a boy, who was injured by rubber bullets, entered their café and her staff gave ice in the wounds.
She said her staff gave water to those who were sitting and lying on the road, the record was heard.
Later, the staff told her that they heard from the injured boy that one was killed with machete and firing was going on, and a girl was raped, according to the record.
The RAB DG said “She [Faria] is a computer science graduate and knows how to use it. She did not share it through her Facebook page. She made this pre-recorded statement audio file. And this audio file is sent through net.”
The RAB chief raised question about the bodies and the girl who was raped.
“These are the simply rumours. She did it deliberately to destabilize the country.”
He said they do not see people’s political identities. “We brought under law all whose involvement was found after investigations and intelligence report.”
Benazir said the elite force formed anti-terrorist wing earlier and later formed another wing after declaring war against drug. Now it formed cyber patrolling wing in the aftermath of spreading rumours over the recent student movement.
“The wing will constantly monitor the cyber world.”
These wings work in all 14 battalion of RAB, apart from the headquarters, the RAB DG said.
