Seven days have gone by since at least 23 media workers were assaulted

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has said DMP is waiting for journalists to file cases seeking investigation into the assault by unidentified attackers that they faced while covering student protests in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

The DMP commissioner made the statement at a briefing at the DMP media centre in Dhaka on Saturday.

“The attack on journalists that day was terrible. If we receive any complaints, we will definitely lodge a case and try to bring the culprits to book,” he said.

However, police are conducting a suo-motu investigation to find out the identities of the attackers from that day, added the commissioner.

“I express a deep apology to journalists who were assaulted while police officials were carrying out their duty,” he said.

“We are trying to solve this by ourselves, but if anyone files a case, we will actively work on them,” he added.

Seven days have gone by since at least 23 media workers were assaulted and had their equipment vandalized by unidentified attackers while they were covering student protests in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

Reporters, photojournalists, and camerapersons were beaten up by unidentified men armed with sharp weapons and rods, many wearing helmets. Videos and photographs of the attacks were published on various platforms, but there has been no official progress in identifying or arresting the attackers.

Student protesters and some victims have blamed activists of the student wing of the ruling party for the attacks. The Awami League has denied this.

A number of journalists’ organizations have issued ultimatums to the government, demanding immediate arrest of the attackers and threatening countrywide movements.
