The total number of people working in the fraud ring is yet to be determined
A fraud ring in Dhaka has been extorting money by posing as Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Awami League office secretary and special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Two suspected members of the criminal syndicate were detained by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) from the capital’s Gopibag area on early Friday. The arrestees were identified as siblings Mohammad Ali, 40, and Nahida Sultana, 27, from Comilla’ Chauddagram area.
In a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Friday afternoon, DB Additional Commissioner Abdul Baten said both the siblings were involved in extortion racket posing as the Awami League office secretary.
He added that the total number of people working in the fraud ring was yet to be determined. “We are also investigating how many people were tricked by the racket.”
The fraud ring would make phone calls to wealthy business men while posing as the Awami League office secretary, and then extort money from them by offering them a position on the party. The ring also used visiting cards with Dr Golap’s picture to scam victims.
When contacted, Dr Golap told the Dhaka Tribune: “I have been hearing about a gang that has been using my identity to extort money for the last few days. In the latest incident, they extorted around Tk20,000 from a person through bKash on Thursday. I informed law enforcement agencies as soon as I learned of the matter.”
The DB additional commissioner has urged citizens to inform the DMP if they receive suspicious phone calls demanding money.
