The teacher has been arrested and taken under one day remand

A class 10 student committed suicide at Shahjahanpur area in the city on Tuesday night after her school teacher reportedly gave her a low score in a recent test.

The teacher has been arrested and taken under one day remand.

In her suicide note, Sumaiya Akhter Maliha, 14, student of commerce section at Shahid Faruk Iqbal Girls High School, accused her teacher Amena Parveen Rimi for provoking her to commit suicide.

She wrote: “Rimi madam is only responsible for my suicide. She took me as her only outlet for anger. She took away my exam script without any reason and gave me poor marks. If you can, take her to a psychiatrist.”

Following the incident, Maliha's father filed a case against the teacher on Wednesday alleging instigated suicide, said Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahjahanpur Police Station.

The teacher has been arrested and has taken under one day remand, he added.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of the police station Moniruzzaman said Maliha's body was recovered from Gulbagh's house Tuesday night. She may have committed suicide between 7pm to 9:30pm.

Maliha's cousin Alamgir Bhuiyan said Maliha never made any complaint against her school before, but she had been upset since her recent exam.

Quoting her mother, Munmum Ahmed, he said Maliha closed the door of her room around 7pm on Tuesday night. Later, they found her hanging from the ceiling.

The family believes the teacher may have been pushing Maliha to join her coaching, but Alamgir said they will wait for police investigation to reveal the truth.

OC Shafiqul said the matter is still under investigation and police arrested the teacher as she was made accused in the case.
