Two youths were attacked for reporting an alleged child rape to the police on Wednesday
A fish trader has been killed in a clash, between two groups, centering on reaching an out-of-court settlement over the rape of a child in Savar.
The victim, Selim Mia, 35, was attacked and killed in Solaiman Market of Savar Municipality area, on Wednesday, around 10pm. His associate, a youth named Rafikul Islam Bhutto, was also attacked, and is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Confirming the matter, Savar Model Police Station Sub Inspector Mohsin Mia told the Dhaka Tribune: “A man was killed over the rape of a child. The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.”
According to the police and locals, a man named Kabir Hossain allegedly raped his niece – an 11-year-old girl – on July 21. Kabir, who lives and works in Kuwait, is visiting Bangladesh.
The child informed her father about the reported sexual abuse she faced from her uncle. However, some of the locals advised the victim’s parents to settle the matter with Kabir out-of -court, and asked him to demand compensation.
Before a settlement could be reached, two local youths – Selim Mia and Rafikul Islam – notified the Savar model police station about the incident. Police rescued the child and detained Kabir Hossain soon after.
Some local youths became angry at Selim and Rafikul for notifying the police, and attacked them the same night with sharp weapons. Selim died on the scene, while Rafikul was critically injured.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Monir Hossain, brother-in-law of the murder victim, said: “One of the attackers, Taje is a distant relative of ours. He has a long-standing dispute with us, centering on land property ownership.
“Taje and his cohorts picked the side of the alleged rapist in exchange for money. My brother-in-law Selim was murdered because he complained about Kabir to the police.”
Police sources said a case will be filed in this regard.
