Bangladesh witnesses 592 rapes in six months

At least 592 incidents of rape have occurred across Bangladesh in the last six months, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) said in a report.

BMP, a women-led organization working to protect women's rights, revealed that these incidents occurred till June 30, reports the UNB.

The report was prepared by compiling the news published in 14 dailies from January to June.

According to a press release, 98 women and children were victims of gang rape. 

The report adds that 29 victims were killed after being raped; 61 individuals managed to escape attempted rape; and 65 women and children were sexually harassed in the last six months.

The BMP said 2,063 women and children became victims of various types of violence, including: rape, eve-teasing, physical torture for dowry demand, etc.

Moreover, at least 45 women and children endured burn injuries from acid attacks, and 10 of them died. 

The report added that 77 women and children were kidnapped and, 13 were trafficked. Of the trafficked people, four were sold in brothels.

The report also said 268 women and children were killed and attempts were made on the lives of 27 others. 

It added that at least 13 domestic helpers were victims of torture— while three were killed and two others were forced to commit suicide. Some 113 women became victims of torture because of dowries, and 51 of them were killed.

According to the report, 90 women were made victims of eve-teasing—out of which, 11 were forced to commit suicide. Another 154 women were forced to commit suicide for different reasons, while nine attempted to commit suicide and 15 were provoked to commit suicide. 

At least 188 women and children died of mysterious causes and a total of 84 girls became victims of child marriage. Concurrently, a total of 171 women and children were physically harassed, and seven others became victims of a fatwa, in the last six months.

Three women were allegedly tortured by police and 20 others were forcefully married off; while 68 incidents of different kinds of torture also took place in the first six months of the year, according to the BMP report.
