2 killed over land dispute in Moulvibazar

According to police and local sources, there was a long dispute going on between Lebas Mia and Elaich Mia of the village, about grabbing government land of the haor area

Two people have been killed and 30 others injured over land disputes in Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila.

The incident happened on Saturday at the Khalipur union’s Poddapur village of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, there was a long dispute going on between Lebas Mia and Elaich Mia of the village, about grabbing government land of the haor area. 

Because of this, supporters of both sides clashed with each other with locally made weapons at 9:30 am on Saturday.

Two people of have been killed in the clash and at least 30 others were injured. The injured were taken to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Police reached the scene after receiving the news and brought the situation under control, and arrested eight people in connection to the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Shafiqur Rahman of Labhas Miah’s group and Abdul Malik of Elaich Miah’s group. Their bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Moulvibazar Sadar Circle Md Rashedul Islam and Chairman of Khalilpur union Arvindu Poddar Bachchu have confirmed the news of the incident.

Local residents said the row has been going on for about 15-20 years between the two men.

Several arbitration meetings were also addressed but no solution came out of it.

The conflict started again 2-3 days ago. On Friday evening, at least one person was injured in a clash between the two sides and some houses were also vandalized. Later the locals calmed both sides down.

Again on Saturday morning both sides engaged in clashes which left two of their men dead.

After a couple of hours, the situation was under control, after the locals and police intervened.

However, local residents fear that there might be clashes again. Police force have been deployment in the area to handle the situation.
