UPDF has accused their rival Jana Sanghati Samiti (MN Larma Group) of killing the man

An activist of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was brutally murdered by unidentified miscreants in Alutila area of Khagrachhari’s Matiranga upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Gyanendu Chakma, 40, a district unit activist of the Chittagong Hill Tracts-based political party.

Both bullet and sharp weapon wounds were found on his body after it was recovered, said Matiranga police station OC Syed Zakir Hossain.

Quoting locals, police said Gyanendu, who was from Mohalchhari upazila, used to collect donations for UPDF’s Prasit Group in the Alutia area.

Locals called police after hearing gunshots in the jungle at Punorbasonpara area in the afternoon.

Police later recovered Gyanendu’s body from the spot and sent it to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said the OC.

Reacting to the incident, UPDF spokesperson Niran Chakma accused their rival Jana Sanghati Samiti (MN Larma Group) of killing Gyanendu.

However, UPDF district unit Organizer Michael Chakma claimed that a group of armed motorcyclists had carried out the attack around 5pm and fled the scene immediately.
