'Zhahid was caught in the ‘gunfight’ and was shot in the head. He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where the on duty doctor pronounced him dead'
A listed criminal, Zhahid Hasan Tokon, 29, was killed in a “gunfight” in the Kayemkola Baghmara Bill area in Jhikargacha upazila of Jessore on Saturday.
According to the police, the “gunfight” took place when Zhahid’s gang members opened fire at the police, during a rescue mission.
Police recovered a pistol, one round of bullets and five bombs from the spot.
Jhikargacha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Aziz said: "Zhahid was arrested from Jessore city at 12am on Friday. During the interrogation, he confessed having a weapon and around of bullets with him.”
“Later, around 3:30am, a police team along with Zhahid went to Kayemkola Baghmara Bill area to take the firearm into their custody. Sensing the presence of the police at the spot, Zhahid’s gang members opened fire. In retaliation the police fired seven round of bullets,” said the OC.
The OC added: “Zhahid was caught in the ‘gunfight’ and was shot in the head. He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where the on duty doctor pronounced him dead.”
“Zhahid had 27 cases filed against him, including murder, drugs and weapons, at Jhikargacha police station. Zhahid was the son of Aslam Master of the upazila’s Krishnanagar village,” the OC further said.
