A 23-year-old housewife has allegedly been kidnapped, raped repeatedly, physically tortured, and murdered.
Victim Kakoli Begum’s mother Helena Begum has filed a case with Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
However, Kakoli’s mother said local union parishad member Shahjahan alias Kohinoor has been trying to threaten her into withdrawing her case, even going as far as to use his influence to let the culprit off through a Tk4 lakh fine at an arbitration.
According to case files and family members, Kakoli had a happy married life, but was repeatedly harassed by her neighbour Rezaul Haque, 30. After being rejected multiple times, Rezaul kidnapped Kakoli and took her to an unknown location, where he repeatedly raped, and physically and mentally tortured her for almost three months, until she was sapped of her strength. Kakoli was then drugged and left for dead near her house, and died while being taken to the hospital by locals.
Locals said even though a case was filed with Dhonbari police station, no action had been taken.
Dhonbari police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Faruqul Islam said: “I heard that the victim had an ongoing affair with the accused. Nobody came to us to file a case, but I heard that one was lodged with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is on the case.”
