Another alleged drug addict died in custody, reportedly due to a heart attack, after his arrest from Baniapara in Panchagarh town.

The deceased was identified as Kajol Sheikh Maju, 43, resident of New Market area in the town.

A team of the Detective Branch led by Sub-inspector Rabiul Islam arrested Maju from Baniapara along with hemp, said Sudarshan Kumar Roy, assistant superintendent of police.

Maju complained of having chest pain on the way to a mobile court. He died at Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital early on Sunday.

Dr Zillur Rahman, a physician of the emergency department at the hospital, said they primarily suspected that Maju died of cardiac arrest.

Meanwhile, another suspected drug addict allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself while in custody at Sonaimuri police station in Noakhali early Saturday.

Tajul Islam Tushar, 23, a rickshaw puller, was the son of Mominul Islam of Daulatpur village in Sonaimuri upazila.

“Tushar committed suicide by hanging himself with his lungi (a type of sarong) from the ceiling of a room in the prison, said AKM Jahirul Islam, additional superintendent of police.

Police claimed that Tajul’s father handed him over to them as he was a drug addict. Nine pieces of contraband yaba were also recovered from his possession, police said.

Kajol and Tajul were arrested in two separate drives after the government launched an aggressive anti-narcotics crackdown that has been marred by widespread allegations of human rights abuse.

More than 130 people, mostly suspected drug peddlers, were killed in alleged gunfights and over 13,000 arrested since the nationwide crackdown was launched in mid-May.
