Update : 27 May 2018, 03:18 AM

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has conducted two anti-drug drives in Kamlapur and Korail slums in Dhaka.

In the two raids carried out on Saturday night, police detained 52 people and recovered 40kg marijuana, 30,000 yaba pills and an unspecified quantity of locally made liquor.

Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, head of the counter-terrorism unit, and other senior police officials visited the spots.

On Saturday morning, RAB raided the Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur, recovered illegal drugs and detained 153 people.

Monirul Islam said: “We have a list of the godfathers of drug dealers and the operation is going on the basis of that list.”

Asked if all detainees were involved in drug trade, Monirul Islam said: “We operate on a policy of zero tolerance on drugs, but we also try to ensure that no one innocent ends up in prison.”

“We will scrutinize them and legal action will be taken against those who are involved in drug trade,” he added.

Police said the Kamlapur drive took place between 8:30pm and 11pm and the Korail slam drive started around 8:45pm and ended around 1am.

So far, more than 70 suspected drug peddlers have been killed in alleged gunfights with the law enforcement agencies since the launch of an aggressive anti-narcotics campaign in early May.
