Pirate dies in RAB shootout in Sundarbans
A member of a pirate gang, Haider, 34, has been killed in a shootout with RAB-8 in Bagerhat in Rampal. The shootout took place in the early hours of Sunday near the north side of Rampal Power Plant. During this time, a single barreled gun, two kata rifles, one LG sartar gun, 12 fresh rounds of bullet, and 31 empty bullet shells were recovered. A RAB-8 official DAD Abdul Khalek confirmed this. He said: “Since 27 members of the three pirate gangs of the Sundarbans have surrendered their weapons to the Home Minister on Sunday morning, we have strengthened our watch around that area. “When we heard a shot fired around 3:30am on Sunday, a RAB team went in to investigate.  When the pirates were alerted of the presence of RAB members, they began firing a barrage of shots. RAB also fired back. After a half hour of shootout, the pirate gang fled into the depths of the forest,” he added. Later a search team consisting of RAB members and locals discovered the bullet-ridden body of a pirate while scoping out that area, which the locals identified as Haider. The dead body, ammunition and bullets recovered from the scene have been handed over to Rampal police station. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampal police station, Lutfur Rahman said: “The body of the deceased robber has been sent to Bagerhat District Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case is also being filed at the station.”
