A member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has been hacked to death following alleged internal feud in the organization at Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati.
The deceased has been identified as Notun Moni Chakma, 42.
He was killed around 11pm on Saturday, said Baghaichhari police station OC Amir Hossain. “His body has been recovered and sent to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.”
According to locals and police, Amaratan Chakma, an acquaintance of Notun, had reportedly called on the victim Saturday night and taken him to a spot near Notun’s house at Balukhali village.
Later, Notun’s body was found with wounds inflicted by sharp weapons.
Amaratan is currently on the run.
The UPDF in a statement issued afterwards condemned the murder of Notun, and claimed it was a pre-planned act orchestrated by local gang leader Sudarshan Chakma along with Gyanjit Chakma, Nobodip Chakma and Amaratan.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts-based organization also demanded immediate arrest of the killers and their punishment.
